Yesterday night I was able to join The Shine Project and help make blankets for homeless youth. The Shine Project is an organization that helps inner city youth make their own money and help first generation kids receive college educations. They are most famous for their handmade jewelry. It's a great organization to get involved in!
Their headquarters are in Phoenix and the founder Ashley Lemieux, invited Al Fox to speak at this event last night. For those of you who do not know Al Fox, she is a Blogger/Speaker/Author and she mainly speaks about her conversion to the LDS church. She and her husband have also started this t-shirt company called BelieverClothingCo. She spoke about how we need to be ourselves and that we are loved not as a whole, but individually, by God. Ashley then also spoke about how we need to shine and help the people around us who are in desperate need. What a great message!
I've known about Al Fox for a couple years and I've always admired her bravery for talking about the gospel. She doesn't hold back her testimony and I was excited to bask in her goodness.
Well, I walked into the place last night and my eyes automatically went to Al who is sitting on the ground casually working on a blanket. I fangirled (but inwardly of course). I acted like it was no big deal that she was 5 ft away from me. She seemed to be busy talking to other people so I kept my distance. I made my blanket sneaking some stalker looks at her just to make sure she was really in the same room as me.
The night was over and everyone formed a line to take pictures with her. I had no idea what I was supposed to say to her. I had a million thoughts running through my head. But eventually I got my words across enough to tell her she inspired me. She LOVED that I was wearing her t-shirt design and wanted to take a picture with ME so she could put it on Instagram. It did go on Instagram that night, so if you follow her, there I am :)
She was so bubbly and down-to-earth. It was refreshing how easy it was to talk to her. You can clearly tell how excited I was by my cheesy smile and very awkward stance.
(low quality picture, high quality event)

P.S This has nothing to do with the blog post, but my husband did the dishes AND put them away without being asked. Celebrate life's little victories! Shine on!
